"The first commandment God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood..."

I read an article in Newsweek last night that led me to write this post. The article was titled "Having Kids Makes You Happy". It basically said that couples are happier without children. I would agree that parenthood is not glamorous and easy, but I would ask anyone who has children to imagine life without them. There are so many things children do that make me smile if not burst out laughing. What is more satisfying than a two year old coming in to your room at night (yes, even when you want to sleep)and kneeling down and saying, "Heavenly Father, thankful for mommy and daddy." The answer about children and happiness cannot be looked at through the eyes of the natural man. Check out 2 Nephi 2:22-25. We do have to pass through sorrow that we may know the joy. Eternal truths were never meant to give us mere pleasure, but they will ultimately give us true joy. Children are truly "...an heritage of the Lord." I will continue to declare that children bring us happiness, despite what "Newsweek" is saying this week.

As for us here in Ann Arbor, we've had one yucky bug after the next. Hiram is the last to be making a full recovery, but the fact that he is finally taking a good nap is a hopeful sign. Glen is taking his step two of the boards today. It happens to be a nine hour test. He has studied well. Anson and I just said an extra prayer for him, and I know he will do great. A new branch of the Ann Arbor library opened this week. It is a super place. I never thought I could get so excited about a library. Both boys love books, and Anson loves the puzzles and computers there as well. The new library probably makes the top five places I love in Ann Arbor. Anson wants to read "Yummy and Yucky" with mommy. I'm off to learn more about things I shouldn't eat like kitty litter, worms, blue crayons and stuff like that. Now we're talking about glamour.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned pleasure versus joy. I think the world mixes those two things up all the time. I know our happiness has only increased. (Jonas picked out Yummy Yucky too! Life with the gospel-Yummy! Life without it--Yucky!)
